US stock market opens lower
Major European markets down more than 1 percent
NEW YORK (AA) - Wall Street opened lower Monday after the downturn in the European stock market made a negative impact across the Atlantic.
The Dow Jones fell 118 points to begin the day at 18,143 and the S&P 500 was down 12 points to 2,152. The NASDAQ decreased 35 points to start the day at 5,270.
When the Wall Street opened, Germany's DAX index was down 1.97 percent, while the U.K.'s FTSE posted a 1.29 percent decrease, and France's CAC 40 saw a 1.62 percent decline.
The U.S. market and investors will closely watch the presidential debate between Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Donald Trump, which will be held after the stock market closes later Monday.
