US stock market opens mixed

NEW YORK (AA) - The stock market opened mixed Friday as gross domestic product (GDP) came lower than expectations, but this was balanced by gains in the tech industry.

The Dow Jones was down 41 points to begin the day at 18,415 and the S&P 500 was flat after trimming 1 point to 2,169. However, the Nasdaq was up 9 points to 5,164 after strong earnings from tech giants.

The U.S. economy grew by only 1.2 percent in the second quarter of the year, the Department of Commerce announced earlier Friday. This was way below expectations of a 2.6 percent increase.

Yet, gains in tech stocks saved the stock market from complete decline in opening once again this week.

After posting strong quarterly results that beat market expectations late Thursday, the share value of Alphabet, Google's parent company, rose more than 3 percent at the first bell. E-commerce giant Amazon's shares climbed as much as 1 percent at the first bell.

Wall Street could end its rally of four consecutive weekly gains at the final bell Friday unless the Dow and S&P posts some gains, according to analysts.
