US stock market opens Thursday lower

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major US stock market indexes opened Thursday lower.

The Dow fell 207 points, or 0.62%, to 33,089 at 9.49 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 lost 26 points, or 0.68% to 3,902.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 97 points, or 0.89%, to 10,859 points.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, soared 4.9% to 21.33. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 0.4% to 3.390%.

The dollar index fell 0.2% to 102.15, while the euro rose 0.15% to $1.0808 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory, with gold rising 0.6% to $1,916 per ounce and silver gaining 0.1% to $23.50.

Crude oil prices were up, with global benchmark Brent crude gaining 0.65% to $85.53 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $80.28 – a 0.6% daily gain.
