US stocks close lower for 3rd straight day

VIX volatility index soars 15.8%; S&P 500 falls 1.64%, Nasdaq plummets 1.82%

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks closed Thursday with losses for the third consecutive trading day.

The Dow was down 370 points, or 1.08%, to end at 34,070, while the S&P 500 fell 72 points, or 1.64%, to 4,330.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, lost 245 points, or 1.82%, to end the session at 13,223.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, soared 15.8% to 17.54. The 10-year US Treasury yield jumped 3.6% to 4.498%.

The dollar index was up 0.27% to 105.41, while the euro was unchanged at $1.0659 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold trimming 0.6% to $1,920 per ounce and silver jumping 0.7% to $23.40.

Oil prices were pretty much flat with global benchmark Brent crude at $93.26 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $89.60.
