US stocks close Monday with gains

Oil prices plummet more than 5.3%; VIX volatility index dives 2.66%

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major US stock exchanges closed Monday with gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose nearly 280 points, or 0.66%, to end the day at 42,387.

The S&P 500 rose 15 points, or 0.27% to 5,823. The Nasdaq Composite added 48 points, or 0.26%, to 18.567.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the "fear index," dove 2.66% to 19.79. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1% to 4.275%.

The US dollar index climbed 0.02% to 104.28, while the euro gained 0.22% against the dollar, trading at $1.0817.

Precious metals were mixed. Gold lost 0.2% to $2,742 per ounce, but silver was flat at $33.71 per ounce.

Oil prices plummeted more than 5.3%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $71.56 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $67.96 per barrel.
