US stocks down at opening to kick off new week lower

ANKARA (AA) - US stocks were down on Monday's opening to kick off the new week on a lower note.

The Dow Jones fell 101 points, or 0.3%, to 33,630 at 9.33 a.m. EDT, while the S&P 500 lost 15 points, or 0.4%, to 3,977.

The Nasdaq declined 110 points, or 0.1%, to 11,212.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 4.3% to 23.48. The 10-year US Treasury yield added 0.8% to 3.861%.

The dollar index added 0.7% to 107.04, still around its highest in 20 years, while the euro shed 0.5% to $1.0302 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold falling 0.3% to $1,766 per ounce but silver remained flat 1.1% to $21.72.

Oil prices changed course and declined more than 1%. Global benchmark Brent crude trading at $94.95 per barrel for a loss of 1.1%. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude was around $87.65 -- down 1.5%.
