US stocks finish mixed as Dow drops 115 points

ISTANBUL (AA) — Major stock exchanges in the US closed Monday on a mixed note as the Dow Jones dropped 115 points.

The blue-chip index lost 0.3% to finish the first trading day of June at 38,571. It jumped 1.51% on Friday to mark its best daily performance of 2024 so far.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, rose almost six points, or 0.11%, to end the session at 5,283.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, increased 93 points, or 0.56%, to close the day at 16,828.

American video game retailer GameStop and pharmaceutical company Novavax saw their shares jump 21% each, while movie theater chain AMC Entertainment's stock price soared more than 11%.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, added 1.5% to 13.11. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 2.7% to 4.394%.

The dollar index shed 0.53% to 104.11, while the euro added 0.55% to $1.0901 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory, with gold rising 0.9% to $2,348 per ounce and silver increasing 0.54% to $30.56.

Oil prices plummeted around 3.6% with global benchmark Brent crude at $78.26 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $74.14.
