US stocks mixed Thursday after record closing, Nvidia shares retreat

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks opened Thursday mixed after the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closed Wednesday at new record-high levels.

The Nasdaq was down 26 points, or 0.15%, to 17,162 at 9.54 a.m. EDT (1354GMT) after the tech-heavy index jumped 1.96% to finish the previous session at 17,187.90.

The S&P 500 rose nearly two points, or 0.04%, to new record-high of 5,356 after closing Wednesday at 5,354.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, meanwhile, was up 186 points, or 0.48%, to 38,993 at the time.

The record feats came as Nvidia also saw its stock price soaring to a record-high of $1,224.40 for a 5.16% daily gain. The chipmaker's market cap passed the $3 trillion mark and has overtaken Apple as the second-most-valuable company in the US by the closing bell.

Nvidia's stock price, however, was trading at $1,201.59 per share at the time for a daily loss of 1.86% and its market cap was down to $2.95 trillion.

Apple, on the other hand, regained its position as the second-most-valuable company in the US with a $3 trillion market cap at that time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 0.87% to 12.74. The 10-year US Treasury yield added 0.2% to 4.293%.

The dollar index lost 0.06% to 104.20, while the euro added 0.16% to $1.0886 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory, with gold adding 0.22% to $2,360 and silver gaining 1.4% to $30.42.

Oil prices were up around 0.3%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $78.67 and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $74.33 per barrel.
