US stocks open Friday higher, trying to recover from previous losses

Blue-chip Dow rises 1.1%, S&P adds 0.84%, Nasdaq gains 0.85%; VIX volatility falls 5.8%; gold up 0.6% to $2,379 per ounce

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major stock exchanges in the US stocks opened higher Friday, trying to recover from previous days' massive losses.

The Dow Jones was up 441 points, or 1.1%, to 40,376 at 9.37 a.m. EDT (1337GMT). The blue-chip index fell 504 points, or 1.25%, on Wednesday.

The S&P 500 increased 45 points, or 0.84%, to 5,444 after it lost 128 points, or 2.31% on Wednesday and an additional 28 points, or 0.51%, on Thursday.

The Nasdaq gained 145 points, or 0.85%, to 17,326 at the time. The tech-heavy index plummeted nearly 655 points, or 3.64%, on Wednesday, and another 160 points, or 0.93%, the day before.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq posted Wednesday their worst daily performance since 2022.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the "fear index," fell 5.8% to 17.39. The 10-year US Treasury yield declined 1.5% to 4.195%.

The dollar index decreased 0.07% to 104.28, while the euro rose 0.16% to $1.0861 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold adding 0.6% to $2,379 per ounce but silver decreasing 0.4% to $27.76.

Oil prices were down around 1%, with global benchmark Brent crude priced at $81.53 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $77.49.
