US stocks trying to rebound from worst slump in 2 years

Blue-chip Dow rises 1.17%, S&P adds 0.8%, Nasdaq gains 0.55%; VIX volatility dives 6.5%; gold falls 1.6% to $2,359 per ounce

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major stock exchanges in the US stocks were higher Thursday, trying to bounce back from their worst slump in two years.

The Dow Jones was up 467 points, or 1.17%, to 40,321 at 1.22 p.m. EDT. The blue-chip index fell 504 points, or 1.25%, on Wednesday.

The S&P 500 increased 43 points, or 0.8%, to 5,470 after it lost 128 points, or 2.31% on previous session.

The Nasdaq gained 95 points, or 0.55%, to 17,437 at the time. The tech-heavy index plummeted nearly 655 points, or 3.64% on previous day.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq posted Wednesday their worst daily performance since 2022.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the "fear index," fell 6.5% to 16.86 after it soared 22.55% to 18.04 on previous day.

The 10-year US Treasury yield declined 0.9% to 4.248%.

The dollar index decreased 0.16% to 104.22, while the euro rose 0.2% to $1.0860 against the greenback.

Precious metals saw losses, with gold falling 1.6% to $2,359 per ounce and silver decreasing 3.7% to $27.83.

Oil prices were up around 0.5%, with global benchmark Brent crude priced at $82.02 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $78.07.
