ISTANBUL (AA) - US tech giant Oracle Corp announced Wednesday that it will open its first public cloud center in Malaysia, investing $6.5 billion to enhance the country’s digital economy.

The new cloud region will offer more than 150 infrastructure and software services aimed at driving Malaysia’s digital transformation and fostering innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on X.

“This decision reflects the confidence and commitment of global companies in Malaysia’s potential as a regional gateway for cloud infrastructure and supporting the growth of the regional AI ecosystem,” Anwar added.

Oracle’s investment follows similar moves by major tech companies such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google, which have collectively committed $16.9 billion to Malaysia.

“It is important for the local workforce and companies to seize the best opportunities from these investments,” Anwar said, urging the establishment of AI faculties, centers of excellence, and initiatives for community empowerment.

“Malaysia offers unique growth opportunities for organizations looking to accelerate their expansion with the latest digital technologies,” said Garrett Ilg, Oracle’s executive vice president for Japan and Asia Pacific.

The new cloud center will expand Oracle’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region to 12 public cloud centers.
