US to pause immigrant visa processing for 75 countries

Fox News says nationals of Brazil, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia, among others to be affected

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US is pausing immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries, a State Department spokesperson confirmed to Anadolu on Wednesday.

The spokesperson, however, did not provide details on the duration of the pause or the full list of affected countries.

Fox News Digital first reported the move, citing an internal State Department memo, which "directs consular officers to refuse visas under existing law while the department reassesses screening and vetting procedures."

The pause applies to immigrant visa processing for nationals from countries including Brazil, Russia, Iran, Somalia, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, and Haiti, among others, according to the report.

It added that the pause could begin as early as Jan. 21.
