Uzbekistan celebrates 33rd anniversary of independence

Uzbek president vows to continue democratic reforms, strengthen armed forces

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AA) - Uzbekistan on Saturday celebrated the 33rd anniversary of its independence with nationwide events, including a major gathering at New Uzbekistan Park in the capital Tashkent.

Speaking at a major gathering at New Uzbekistan Park in the capital Tashkent, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that his country has entered a “new historical period.”

“By virtue of independence itself, we have taken our place in the world community. We couldn't be prouder of that," he added.

Mirziyoyev highlighted recent achievements, such as Uzbekistan's projected 5.3% gross domestic product (GDP) growth for this year and the country’s GDP surpassing $100 billion for the first time in 2023.

He also lauded Uzbekistan's athletes for winning 13 medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, calling it a "gift to the nation" by the Olympic team.

Mirziyoyev vowed to continue democratic reforms and strengthen the armed forces of the country.

The celebrations concluded with folk performances, a fireworks display, and the awarding of state honors.
