Venezuela passes law targeting domestic supporters of sanctions against government

Law imposes lengthy prison sentences as well as severe penalties including fines and political bans

By Sinan Dogan

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - Venezuela’s National Assembly passed a law Thursday that imposes prison sentences of 25 to 30 years on anyone who supports sanctions against the government.

If signed by President Nicolas Maduro, the law would not only impose lengthy prison terms but also fines of up to $1 million.

It also includes penalties for crimes such as inciting violence, participating in cyberattacks and supporting unrest, with political bans and removal from office for up to 60 years.

Foreigners violating the law could face deportation and asset confiscation.

According to government figures, Venezuela has been subjected to more than 900 sanctions over the past decade, primarily from the United States.

Meanwhile, a new US proposal to impose additional sanctions on Venezuela has gained support from opposition figures, including María Corina Machado.

In response, Venezuela's prosecutor's office announced an investigation into Machado on charges of treason on Nov. 23.
