ANKARA (AA) - Veteran Filipino journalist Juan P. Dayang, a former longtime president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI), was shot dead at his home in Kalibo city, in the western Aklan province, on Tuesday evening, local media reported.
Police have launched an investigation into the killing by unidentified gunmen, according to the Manila Times.
Dayang, 89, was reportedly shot at least three times by an unknown assailant inside his residence. He was preparing to celebrate his 90th birthday on June 24.
The Philippines' Presidential Task Force on Media Security condemned the incident on Wednesday, calling it a “heinous act.”
The National Press Club of the Philippines urged authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
