Vilnius alleges Belarus security agency seeking recruits in Lithuania through social networks

ISTANBUL (AA) - Lithuania’s intelligence warned Wednesday that Belarus’ security agency KGB is allegedly seeking potential agents in the country through a Lithuanian-language YouTube video.

The State Security Department (VSD) said the KGB is circulating a YouTube video in an alleged attempt to recruit agents by tapping into dissatisfaction with the Lithuanian government, according to the broadcaster LRT.

VSD noted that the Lithuanian-language video, which identifies its author as the KGB, cites problems “caused by the government’s injustice” and invites viewers to discuss them with Belarus’ security agency through a “secure channel.”

"The VSD reminds that Russian and Belarusian intelligence services actively use social networks to search for potential agents, recruit them and maintain contact with them," it further stressed in a statement.

The agency reaffirmed that its officers will help assess "whether the threat is real."

In the meantime, Lithuanian lawmakers are seeking to change the current rules that allow non-EU foreigners with permanent residence permits to vote, aside from Lithuanian citizens and EU nationals.

Conservative MPs propose changes to restrict the right of foreign nationals to vote in municipal elections, citing increased security concerns.

The draft amendments, already registered in the parliament, are expected to be debated during the spring session starting in March.
