Virus fatalities, infections mount in Latin America

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - Countries across Latin America reported new COVID-19 infections and fatalities on Thursday, according to official data.

- Brazil

In the country that is the world’s fourth worst-hit by the virus, a total of 1,148 more people lost their lives and 39,982 people were infected over the past 24 hours.

The death toll rose to 566,896 and confirmed cases exceeded 20.28 million, according to the Health Ministry.

The country has reported over 19.15 million recoveries so far.

- Mexico

According to the Health Ministry, Mexico's COVID-19 case tally surged by 24,975, while fatalities increased by 608.

The country of some 126 million people has recorded nearly 3.45 million cases, 246,811 deaths, and over 2.39 million recoveries.

- Argentina

A total of 13,369 new infections raised Argentina’s case tally to over 5.66 million, according to Health Ministry data.

The nationwide death toll rose to 108,569 as 181 patients died over the past day. More than 4.71 million recoveries were also reported.

- Colombia

Colombia’s Health Ministry reported 144 more fatalities over the past day, raising the country’s virus death toll to 123,097.

The total number of cases is over 4.85 million, including 4,272 new infections, while the number of recoveries stood at over 4.67 million.

- Peru

According to data from the Health Ministry, 32 more people died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 197,209.

The country reported 775 new cases, raising total infections to 2.13 million, while recoveries reached 2.97 million.

- Chile

Over the past day, Chile reported 86 fatalities, bringing the death toll to 36,243, according to the Health Ministry.

The number of infections rose by 1,128 to cross the 1.62 million mark, with total recoveries reaching 1.58 million.

- Paraguay

According to data from Paraguay's Health Ministry, 20 more virus patients died over the past day, pushing the death toll to 15,383.

The country reported 227 new cases, raising total infections to 456,291, while recoveries reached 431,006.

- Honduras

According to local media in Honduras, the country reported 29 fatalities over the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 8,339.

The number of coronavirus cases in the country rose by 2,159 to reach 314,351.

A total of 103,969 people have recovered from the virus.
