Volvo to limit vehicle speeds
Company wants to reduce fatalities, injuries in car accidents by restricting speeds to 111 mph

ISTANBUL (AA) - Volvo announced Monday it would impose a maximum speed of 111 mph (180 kmph) on all its vehicles by 2020.
"The company’s Vision 2020, which aims for no one to be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020," the Swedish automaker said in a statement.
The company cited speed as the most important factor in serious injuries and fatalities in road accidents with its cars.
"Because of our research we know where the problem areas are when it comes to ending serious injuries and fatalities in our cars. And while a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it’s worth doing if we can even save one life," the CEO said in a written statement.
As part of Vision 2020, Volvo in currently conducting a study on a smart-speed control system for automatic speed limits around schools and hospitals.
"The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration shows that 25 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. in 2017 were caused by speeding," the press release read.
