Wall Street closes higher as S&P records new high

NEW YORK (AA) – Wall Street closed higher Monday as strong jobs data figure Friday continued to create bullish sentiment in the market.

The Dow Jones rose 80 points to end the day at 18,226 points and the S&P 500 was up 7 points to close at 2,137. The Nasdaq gained 31 points to finish at 4,988.

The S&P 500 climbed to as high as 2,143 points -- an all-time high. Meanwhile, the Dow finished the day with its highest closing in 13 months.

The gains were a continuation of increases following a strong jobs report last week.

Crude oil prices were down at the close of markets Monday, however, due to oversupply worries and lower than expected global demand for the summer season.

American benchmark West Texas Intermediate traded at $44.51 a barrel with a 2 percent decrease at the closing bell, and international benchmark Brent crude was at $46.06 -- a 1.5 percent loss.
