Wall Street closes with gains; posts weekly losses
September retail sales figures meet expectations
NEW YORK (AA) – Wall Street closed Friday in positive territory but ended the week with losses.
The Dow was up with 39 points to finish the day at 18,138. The S&P and the Nasdaq each ended flat, at 2,132 and 5,214, respectively.
The Dow was down 0.6 percent for the week, the S&P lost 1 percent and the Nasdaq fell 1.5 percent.
Retail sales met forecasts by rising 0.6 percent in September from the previous month, according to the Commerce Department.
Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren said he believes there is a higher likelihood the bank would raise interest rates in December, rather than November.
Those remarks to CNBC prompted investors to buy but the S&P and the Nasdaq could barely hold their positions in positive territory after weak quarterly results from major banks.
Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo all announced third quarter losses compared to the same period a year ago.
