WFP warns of 'death sentence' as US signals end to emergency food aid in 14 countries

UN agency urges Washington to reconsider cuts that could impact millions facing starvation

GENEVA (AA) - The World Food Program (WFP) expressed deep concern late Monday over recent indications from the US that funding for emergency food assistance in 14 countries will be terminated.

"If implemented, this could amount to a death sentence for millions of people facing extreme hunger and starvation," it said in a statement, warning that the potential cuts could have devastating consequences in some of the world’s most fragile contexts.

The agency said it is currently engaging with Washington to seek clarification and to advocate for the continuation of funding for critical life-saving operations.

While expressing alarm over the potential impact, WFP also expressed gratitude to the US and other donors for their support.

"Our staff continue to work tirelessly to reach vulnerable communities with vital food assistance in hunger hot spots around the world," it added.

The 14 countries potentially affected by the funding cuts have not yet been named.

WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain, in a post on X, urged world leaders to weigh the consequences.

"With conflicts and extreme hunger surging, pulling support doesn’t just cost lives—it undermines global stability," she stressed.
