Research aimed at supporting livestock herders in drought-prone east Africa

By Wallace Mawire

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AA) – The Rockefeller Foundation has awarded Kenyan economist Andrew Mude the 2016 Norman Borlang award for field research.

According to Nicole Barreca, Director of Communications and Events for the World Food Prize, Mude made novel use of satellite data to help livestock breeders protect their herds from drought conditions in the Horn of Africa region.

It is thought the research will help develop insurance for communities which are dependent on their livestock in drought-prone areas.

It is also reported that 39-year-old Mude will be formally presented with $10,000 in October in the U.S. as part of the 2016 World Food Prize international symposium.
