World leaders wish UK monarch swift recovery after cancer diagnosis

LONDON (AA) — World leaders are sending well wishes to King Charles after he was diagnosed with cancer and has started treatment.

Buckingham Palace announced the monarch's condition on Monday, following an earlier medical intervention for benign prostate enlargement.

"Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer," said the palace statement, without naming the type of cancer but affirming that it is not of the prostate.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told BBC on Tuesday that he was "shocked and sad" to hear of the news but was thankful it was "caught early" and that "everyone will be wishing him a full recovery."

US President Joe Biden said on X: "Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage.

"Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery."

French President Emmanuel Macron also took to X to wish "His Majesty King Charles III a speedy recovery.

"Our thoughts are with the British people. Amities."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also sent a message of best wishes to the British monarch. "I, like Canadians across the country and people around the world, am thinking of His Majesty King Charles III as he undergoes treatment for cancer," Trudeau said on X, voicing hope for a "fast and full recovery."

Former US president Donald Trump posted on the Truth Social platform: "He is a wonderful man, who I got to know well during my presidency, and we all pray that he has a fast and full recovery."
