‘Worst is yet to come’ in Israel-Palestine conflict: UN relief chief

Martin Griffiths emphasizes need to protect civilians, infrastructure in Gaza Strip

By Alperen Aktas

ISTANBUL (AA) - UN Deputy Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths evaluated developments in the Israel-Palestine conflict Saturday and said: "I fear that the worst is yet to come.”

“In Israel, families are reeling from the horror of last Saturday’s attack,” said Griffiths, according to the UN News website.

“More than a thousand people have been killed and many more have been injured. Over 100 people are held captive,” he said.

Griffiths said civilians in occupied Palestinian territories and Israel had a week filled with suffering.

“In Gaza, families have been bombed while inching their way south along congested, damaged roads, following an evacuation order that left hundreds of thousands of people scrambling for safety but with nowhere to go,” he said.

He emphasized the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

“Already critical, is fast becoming untenable,” he added.
