Zambia to evacuate nationals from Israel if situation with Iran worsens

Foreign minister says making necessary arrangements to evacuate nationals if ceasefire does not hold

By James Kunda

LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) - Zambia has activated the necessary protocols and will evacuate 177 of its nationals from Israel if hostilities with Iran resume, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe told the parliament on Friday.

"There is currently a ceasefire in place between Israel and Iran. However we are making necessary arrangements to evacuate our nationals in the event that it does not hold," he said.

Zambians in Israel include students, religious pilgrims, diplomatic personnel, tourists, and professionals working in various sectors.

The US announced a truce between Iran and Israel after 12 days of fighting over Tehran's nuclear program.

Haimbe said evacuation will be done through the Taba border crossing into Egypt, saying it is the most viable exit route.

"Vulnerable individuals, including students, minors and persons with health conditions were given priority. Evacuees received consular assistance and guidance on safe passage," he said, referring to the emergency tracking and communication mechanism to account for all registered Zambians in Israel.

The minister said there were four Zambians in Iran as well, and that no casualties involving them had been reported.

"They have been advised to observe maximum caution and remain in contact with designated liaison officers. The ministry, in liaison with missions in Ankara (Türkiye) and Cairo (Egypt), is making necessary arrangements to facilitate their evacuation should the situation deteriorate," he added.
