ROME (AA) - Italian police arrested eight people after clashes among football fans in Naples as Napoli on Wednesday eliminated Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt from the UEFA Champions League.
Violent clashes erupted ahead of the last 16 match, which was won by Napoli 3-0, entering the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time.
"I'm monitoring what has happened on our streets. An unacceptable climate of guerrilla warfare," Gaetano Manfredi, the mayor of Naples, said on Twitter.
"My thanks go to the police forces who acted to guarantee the safety of the citizens. I appeal to Neapolitans, be responsible," he added.
Clashes were also reported between supporters and police, and a police car was in flames.
Naples police chief Alessandro Giuliano said five of those detained were Napoli supporters, while the other three were visiting fans from Germany.
Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser also condemned the clashes, tweeting "violence and hooligans destroy sport."
For security concerns, Italian authorities did not let Napoli sell tickets to residents in Germany after the altercations between the two clubs' fans during the first leg on Feb. 21. The Frankfurt police previously made several arrests.
