Alex Honnold’s live free-solo climb of Taipei 101 postponed because of bad weather

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AA) - Alex Honnold, the free-solo climber famed for scaling Yosemite’s El Capitan without ropes, will have to wait one more day before attempting one of his most ambitious feats: climbing the exterior of Taipei 101.

Honnold’s live ascent of the 508-meter (1,667-foot) skyscraper, originally scheduled for Friday, was postponed due to inclement weather in Taiwan, with low temperatures and an 80% chance of precipitation.

“Because of the weather conditions, we are postponing today’s event,” Netflix said in a statement on social media. The live broadcast has been rescheduled for Saturday at 9 am local time (0100GMT), according to an updated listing on the streaming platform.

The climb, titled Skyscraper Live, is expected to take 90 minutes. Honnold plans to climb all 101 floors of Taipei 101 completely free solo, without ropes, harnesses or protective equipment, while being filmed in real time for a global audience.

Netflix said safety was the deciding factor in postponing the climb. “Safety is always our top priority,” it said, thanking viewers for their understanding as it waits for clearer conditions.
