Australia inaugurates 'world’s largest battery-electric ship' in Tasmania

Once in service between Buenos Aires, Uruguay, it is to carry up to 2,100 passengers, 225 vehicles across River Plate, 'entirely on battery-electric power'

ISTANBUL (AA) - Australia launched "the world’s largest battery-electric ship," in its southern state of Tasmania on Friday, according to a statement from the Tasmanian company, Incat

The Hull 096, 130 meters (426 feet) long, was built for South American ferry operator Buquebus, it said.

The ship "represents a giant leap forward in sustainable shipping," it said, adding that once in service between Buenos Aires and Uruguay "it will operate entirely on battery-electric power, carrying up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the River Plate."

The fully electric vessel comes with more than 250 tons of batteries and an Energy Storage System (ESS) with an installed capacity of more than 40 megawatt-hours.

The ESS, which is "four times larger than any previous maritime installation in the world," is connected to eight electric-driven waterjets.

The next step will be to build the interior. The battery will be installed and the energy system integrated before sea trials later this year.
