ISTANBUL (AA) - Borussia Monchengladbach’s Austrian player Stefan Lainer has been diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Thursday.
"The Austria international will now need to undergo several months of treatment. The cancer has been detected extremely early and is treatable with medication," Monchengladbach said in a statement.
"There is an extremely high chance that he will get back to full health, and a normal life including professional sport could still be possible," the German football club said.
It added that Lainer would be missing from action for several months.
He has been at Monchengladbach since 2019 and produced four goals and 13 assists in 125 matches in the squad.
Right-back has been representing Austria since 2017, scoring two goals in 38 appearances for the national team.
The 30-year-old helped his previous club Red Bull Salzburg win four Austrian top-division titles.
