Gaza ceasefire, prisoner swap deal

Day nine of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as the first phase of the Hamas-Israel deal continues.

The phase, which includes a prisoner exchange, started on Jan. 19 and is set to last for 42 days.

Israeli authorities have so far refused to allow the return of Palestinian residents to northern Gaza until Israeli captive Arbel Yehud is released. Hamas confirmed that the hostage would be released in the next swap.

Seven Israeli captives, including four soldiers, have been released in return for 290 Palestinian prisoners since the deal came into force.


Humanitarian and security situation in Gaza

Two Palestinians were killed and seven others, including a child, injured on Sunday by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip despite a truce in place, medics said.

The Palestinian death toll from Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023 has reached 47,306, according to the Health Ministry in the enclave.


Egypt, Jordan reject Trump's plan to relocate Gazans

International and regional reactions on US President Trump’s call for resettlement of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to Jordan and Egypt.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reaffirmed his country's steadfast and unchanging stance against the resettlement of Palestinians. "Our principles are clear, and Jordan’s steadfast position to uphold the Palestinians' presence on their land remains unchanged and will never change," Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said in a press conference.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry also rejected the proposal, affirming "continued support for the resilience of the Palestinian people on their land and their commitment to their legitimate rights in their homeland, in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law."

Hamas, meanwhile, urged the US administration "to abandon these proposals, which align with Israeli plans and clash with the rights and free will of our people."


Israel, Lebanon extend deadline for Israeli withdrawal

The US said on Sunday Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend the deadline for Israeli troops to depart southern Lebanon until Feb. 18. Israel requested more time to withdraw beyond the 60-day deadline according to the ceasefire agreement that halted the Israel-Hezbollah war in late November.

At least 15 people were killed and 83 others injured by Israeli army fire on Sunday as displaced civilians were trying to return to their areas in southern Lebanon, according to local authorities.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) called on the Israeli army on Sunday to avoid firing at civilians in southern Lebanon.


Italian Prime Minister Meloni to visit Bahrain

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit Bahrain on Monday, becoming the first Italian head of government to visit the Gulf country.

She embarked Saturday on a three-day trip to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to discuss the situation in Syria and Lebanon and other international issues.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held talks on Sunday with Meloni during her visit to Saudi Arabia.


Israeli Prime Minister testifying in ongoing corruption trial

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will testify on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before the Tel Aviv District Court in his criminal trial.

Netanyahu is expected to testify from 9 am to 2 pm, instead of 9 am to 4 pm.

He began his testimony on Dec. 10, 2024 and was to testify for six hours each Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday until the end of the month.

The premier is charged with several counts of fraud and breach of trust, and one count of bribery. He denies wrongdoing and has said the charges were fabricated by the state prosecution and police investigators in an attempted political coup.


West Bank raids

Almost daily Israeli military raids on Palestinian cities and towns in the occupied West Bank, and illegal settler violence against Palestinians and their property.

On Sunday, another Palestinian died from Israeli army fire in the West Bank city of Jenin, taking the death toll from a military operation in the area to 16, the Health Ministry said.

Israel has killed at least 876 people in the occupied West Bank since October 2023 and injured over 6,700 others, with more than 14,300 taken into custody.


Developments in Syria under new administration

Latest developments and updates in Syria under the new post-Assad administration.

On Sunday, Syrian administration leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa received Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin at the People's Palace in the capital Damascus.

The new Syrian government’s border authority is said to have seized weapons that were being smuggled across the border to Lebanese group Hezbollah.
