Dutch defender van Dijk renews deal with Liverpool

ANKARA (AA) - Liverpool's Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk on Friday signed a new long-term contract which will keep him at the English Premier League club until 2025.

"The centre-back (van Dijk) committed his future to the Reds by putting pen to paper at Anfield on Friday morning, ensuring his three-and-a-half-year association with the club will be prolonged well into the coming years," Liverpool said in a statement.

Van Dijk, 30, said he is extremely happy to maintain at Liverpool.

"All the hard work we've put in so far continues and I am looking forward to what the future brings together with Liverpool. I'm delighted, very happy and proud."

Van Dijk tweeted that his Liverpool days will continue and put his photo with Liverpool jersey on which 2025 was printed.

This means his new deal at the Reds will expire in four years.

The Dutch national team captain piled up 130 appearances for Liverpool since 2018. He scored 13 goals for the club.

One of the integral parts of the squad, van Dijk won the 2019 UEFA Champions League and 2020 English Premier League titles.

In addition, van Dijk helped the Reds claim the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Before Liverpool, he had played for England's Southampton, Scottish club Celtic, and Groningen of the Netherlands.

Van Dijk has been playing for the Netherlands since 2015.
