End of an era as Valentino Rossi calls time on MotoGP career

ANKARA (AA) – Valentino Rossi’s illustrious racing career came to a close on Sunday, marking the end of an era in which the Italian legend cemented his place as one of the greats of motorsports.

After crossing the finish line in Valencia on his 432nd start, the 42-year-old was given a fitting farewell by a crowd of some 75,000 people as he took a lap of honor.

The most successful motorbike racer of his generation bowed out with 115 race wins, nine world titles, and 235 podiums.

Rossi, who announced his decision to retire back in August, remains the only rider to win world titles in 125cc, 250cc, 500cc, and MotoGP.

Brazilian football legend Ronaldo, one of Rossi’s favorites, was at the race to support him, while messages from other celebrities, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Tom Cruise, were played on the giant screen as the Italian icon bid a final goodbye to a sport he ruled for 26 years.​​​​​​​
