Ethiopia’s Fikre Bekele Tefera shatters record in 2022 Rome Marathon victory
Ethiopian athletes dominate men's, women's standings in Italian capital

ANKARA (AA) – Ethiopia’s Fikre Bekele Tefera set a new record as he won the 2022 Rome Marathon on Sunday.
He broke the tape in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 48 seconds, shattering the previous best of 2:07.17 set by Kenya’s Benjamin Kiptoo in 2009.
Tadesse Mamo Temechachu made it a 1-2 finish for Ethiopia in the 26-mile race by crossing the line at 02:07.04, while Morocco’s Othamane El Goumri took the last podium spot with a time of 02:07.16.
Ethiopia also took first and third spots in the women’s standings.
Sechale Dalasa Adugna was the winner with a time of with 02:26.09, while her compatriot Tadelech Bekele Nedi came in third at 02:31.01.
Kenya’s Gladys Jeruto Kiptoo took second position with a finish of 02:28.45.
The race has been held annually in the historic Italian capital since 1982, with the only cancellations being through 1992 to 1994 and then again in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
