Ethiopia's Tola Tamirat takes marathon gold in Olympic record

Tamirat, 32, wins race in new Olympic record of 2 hours, 6 minutes, 26 seconds, ahead of Bashir Abdi, Benson Kipruto

ISTANBUL (AA) - Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola won gold in the men's marathon on Saturday and set an Olympic record at the Paris Games.

“I was the reserve in the Ethiopian team, but when Sisay (Lemma) had injuries, then I had a chance to represent him. I was fully prepared and knew I could fulfill my dream. I am happy to do that today. I am very proud, very happy," the Olympic champion said after the victory.

Tola, 32, finished in an Olympic record time of two hours, six minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Belgium's Bashir Abdi. Benson Kipruto took bronze for Kenya.

Tola is the fourth Ethiopian to win the men's marathon at the Olympics.


- Emmanuel Wanyonyi wins gold in 800m race

Emmanuel Wanyonyi won gold in the Paris 2024 men’s 800m at the Stade de France.

The 20-year-old Kenyan crossed the finish line first in 1:41.19, ahead of Marco Arop of Canada who won silver in 1:41.20, and Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati who claimed bronze in 1:41.50.

Wanyonyi turned 20 on Aug. 1 and is the third fastest man ever in the 800m.


- Jakob Ingebrigtsen wins Olympic 5000m Final

Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men's 5000m gold while Kenya's Ronald Kewmoi claimed silver and the bronze went to Grant Fisher of the US.

Ingebrigtsen, 23, won the race for Norway in a time of 13:13.66.​​​​​​​
