Football: Arsenal reinforce defense with new signings

ANKARA (AA) - English Premier League club Arsenal strengthened their defense late Thursday with two new players.

Chelsea's Brazilian center-back David Luiz and Celtic's Scottish left-back Kieran Tierney completed their move to the Gunners, the London club said on Twitter.

Luiz, 32, last played for Arsenal's city rivals Chelsea.

The former Brazilian international scored three goals in 50 matches for Chelsea last season.

Luiz is regarded as an experienced football player, appearing for Portuguese giants Benfica, Chelsea and French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain.

"David has huge experience, and I look forward to working with him again. He is a well-known player and adds to our defensive strength," Arsenal manager Unai Emery said on the club’s website.

Emery also praised Tierney while welcoming him to the club.

"We’re delighted Kieran is joining us. He’s a very talented player who will continue to improve. He increases our options defensively and I look forward to him joining our group.”

Arsenal didn't provide any details about Thursday's deals.

Tierney, 22, was a pure Celtic product, coming from the Glasgow team's youth academy.

The Scottish international tallied eight goals and 37 assists in 170 appearances for Celtic.
