ISTANBUL (AA) - UEFA confirmed Wednesday that former Fenerbahce head coach Jozef Venglos has died. He was 84.
"Slovak football and Europe's coaching community are mourning the death of Jozef Venglos, who made a crucial contribution to Czechoslovakia's 1976 EURO triumph," UEFA said in a statement.
The Slovakian manager took charge of Portugal's Sporting Lisbon, England's Aston Villa and Scotland's Celtic, as well as Japan's United Chiba.
Venglos was the first manager outside the UK to coach in the English top division when he helmed Aston Villa in the 1990-91 campaign.
He also had stints in charge of Turkey’s Fenerbahce for 69 games during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.
A final farewell will be Feb. 2 at the Bratislava Crematorium, according to the Slovak Football Association.
