Former world no. 1 in tennis and 2018 women's champion Caroline Wozniacki was handed a 2024 Australian Open wildcard on Wednesday to play at the first Grand Slam of the year in January.
"... Caroline Wozniacki, plus six Aussie talents, have been awarded main-draw wildcards for Australian Open 2024," the organizers said in a statement.
"I have so many wonderful memories of Melbourne, and of course winning the Australian Open is an all-time career highlight,” said Wozniacki.
"Melbourne’s one of my most favourite cities in the world, and I can’t wait to share it with my family and my kids,” she told Australian Open podcast.
In addition to Wozniacki, Australian Open said that Australian nationals Kimberly Birrell, Olivia Gadecki, Taylah Preston, James Duckworth, Marc Polmans and Adam Walton were granted their wildcards each.
Danish player Wozniacki, 33, retired from tennis in 2020 but then returned to the game in August after she gave birth to her two children; Olivia (2021), and James (2022).
The 2024 Australian Open will start on Jan. 14 in Melbourne.
