Former Turkish footballer Ziya Sengul dies at 79

Sengul was captain of Fenerbahce club, represented national team

ANKARA (AA) - Famous Turkish footballer Ziya Sengul died at age 79 on Sunday, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) confirmed.

Sengul represented the country's national team and Istanbul-based club Fenerbahce.

The Turkish Football Federation expressed their sadness at the death of Sengul, "who was one of the most valuable players of Turkish football."

Fenerbahce also offered condolences to Sengul's family and friends.

Sengul played for Fenerbahce in 1964-1975 to become a five-time Turkish champion, and he rose to lead the club as captain.

He coached Fenerbahce after his retirement from the game in 1975.

Sengul, who amassed 21 international caps for Türkiye, was also a football commentator and part-time columnist.

He will be buried at Istanbul's Asiyan Cemetery on Monday after the afternoon prayers.
