France crash out of UEFA Nations League with 1-0 loss to Croatia

ANKARA (AA) - France were eliminated from the 2022 UEFA Nations League on Monday after losing 1-0 to Croatia, suffering their second defeat in four matches.

Croatia grabbed an early lead with a penalty goal by veteran midfielder Luka Modric in the fifth minute at the Stade de France.

France, the 2021 reigning champions, now sit at the bottom of League 1 Group A with just two points and face relegation if they stay there after their remaining matches in September.

Croatia placed second with 7 points.

- Denmark keep their place at top spot of group

In the other League 1 Group A match Monday, Denmark beat Austria 2-0.

Jonas Wind and Andreas Skov Olsen scored for Denmark in the 21st and 37th minutes respectively at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Denmark lead the standings with 9 points while Austria are placed third with 4 points in the group table.

Croatia will host Denmark while France will take on Austria in the Game 5 round of the group stage on Sept. 22.
