France, UK, Germany condemn Iran’s alleged missile exports to Russia, announce new sanctions

'This act is an escalation by both Iran and Russia, and is a direct threat to European security,' say trio of European heavyweights in joint statement

LONDON (AA) - The foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the UK, known collectively as the E3, issued a strong joint condemnation Tuesday following a 'confirmation' of reports that say Iran is exporting ballistic missiles to Russia.

The missiles are believed to bolster Moscow’s military efforts in its ongoing war against Ukraine, raising concerns about escalating tensions and European security risks.

In their statement, the trio described Iran’s actions as a significant escalation of its military support for Russia’s aggression.

"The E3 has privately and publicly been clear that we would take new and significant measures against Iran if the transfers took place. We now have confirmation that Iran has made these transfers," it said.

They warned that the procurement of Iranian ballistic missiles by Russia poses a direct threat to European security, as the weapons could reach European soil and worsen Ukrainians’ suffering.

"This act is an escalation by both Iran and Russia, and is a direct threat to European security," the statement said.

In response, the trio announced immediate measures, including the cancellation of bilateral air services agreements with Iran.

Additionally, they confirmed their intention to designate entities and individuals involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program, particularly those responsible for the transfer of these missiles to Russia.

The trio is also seeking sanctions against Iran’s national carrier, Iran Air.
