ATHENS (AA) - Germany and Sweden on Friday said that it is up to Ukraine to decide whether and when negotiations with Moscow should start.

Speaking at a joint news conference in Berlin with visiting Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine.

Recalling his talks with US President-elect Donald Trump, Scholz said: “I do not expect him to break off the support that America has extended to Ukraine in the field of defense.”

Scholz said that Russia’s war in Ukraine has strengthened NATO and that Moscow has so far failed to achieve its strategic objectives due to the support provided to Kyiv by its allies.

“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin must realize that the time has come for this war to end. Our task is to do whatever we can to prepare the ground for a peace that can be achieved and sustained,” he added.

Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson echoed the need for increased support to Ukraine, stressing that it should be both extensive and decisive.

He called for tighter sanctions on Russia, particularly targeting its energy sector, as a priority.

On relations with the US, Kristersson said, “We look forward to working closely with the incoming American administration to promote a more prosperous, secure, and sustainable world.”
