Greece mulling stricter law for rejected asylum seekers

ATHENS (AA) - Greece announced Wednesday that it is mulling stricter laws for rejected asylum seekers, according to the state-run AMNA news agency.

“If I had to write a headline, I would say that the penalties will be harsher for those who enter illegally or reside in our country after their asylum application is rejected. With clear explanations, clear solutions, we want to make the return mechanism more effective and fair,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at a Cabinet meeting.

“This is not just a national priority. It is a European priority.”

Mitsotakis also revealed that the flow of migration to Greece was reduced because of efficient measures and cooperation with Turkish authorities.

He added, however, that the EU should provide Greece with more support to strengthen border security as it will automatically mean safer borders for the entire bloc.
