Indonesia says China offered sale of J-10 fighter jets: Report

Government examining whether Chinese-made jets meet Indonesia’s operational requirements and can be integrated into existing systems, deputy defense minister says

Indonesia has confirmed that China offered to sell its J-10 multirole fighter jets to Jakarta, Bloomberg reported Thursday, citing remarks from Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto.

The offer was made during a recent visit by Indonesian Air Force officials to China, Taufanto said.

“This is just an offer,” he said, adding that the government is examining whether the Chinese-made jets, widely used by China’s air force, meet Indonesia’s operational requirements and can be integrated into its existing systems.

Indonesian Air Force Chief Marshal Mohamad Tonny Harjono also said the purchase of J-10C fighters remained a possibility.

“We are considering it,” he told Indonesia’s state-run Antara News, while noting that acquiring a main weapons system “is not an easy decision.”

The J-10, developed by Avic Chengdu Aircraft Co Ltd., is a single-engine, multirole fighter jet.
