Iraq’s federal court dissolves Kurdish provincial councils in northern Iraq

Court says amendments of provincial councils law ‘unconstitutional’

By Anadolu staff

ANKARA (AA) – Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court on Sunday ruled to dissolve the provincial councils in northern Iraq’s Kurdish region due to the end of their electoral term.

In a statement, the court said that Article No. 2 in Law No. 2 of 2019, which amended the law of the Kurdish region’s provincial councils was “unconstitutional.”

The court said the amendments were in violation of Article No. 2 of the Iraqi constitution.

Elections for the provincial councils were held in April 2014, and members of the councils were sworn in June of the same year to serve for four years.

In 2019, the parliament of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) amended three clauses in Article No. 2, allowing the councils to continue their duties until elections are held.

There was no comment yet from the KRG on the court ruling.
