ANKARA (AA) – Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini said on Tuesday that he pulled out of the 2022 Wimbledon as he contracted the coronavirus.
"I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test result.
"I have had flu symptoms and been isolating the last few days. Despite symptoms not being severe, I decided it was important to take another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone else involved in the tournament," Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up in men's singles, said on Instagram.
Meanwhile Wimbledon replied the 26-year-old on Instagram to wish a speedy recovery.
"Do hope you're feeling better soon, Matteo," Wimbledon said.
On Monday, Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic, 33, said on Instagram that he would miss this year's Wimbledon for a positive COVID-19 test.
The 2022 Wimbledon started on Monday and will run through July 10.
