Kenyan long-distance runner Kelvin Kiptum on Sunday broke marathon world record with run of just over two hours at the Chicago Marathon.

Kiptum, 23, clocked two hours and 35 seconds to beat his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge's record by 34 seconds.

World Athletics confirmed Kiptum shattered the men's world record.

"Kelvin Kiptum destroys the marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon with 2:00:35. He becomes the first man in history to break 2:01," the governing body said on X.

Two-time Olympic champion Kipchoge ran the 2022 Berlin Marathon in 2:01:09, a world record then.

Last year's winner Benson Kipruto from Kenya came second by finishing in a time of 2:04:02, while Belgium's Bashir Abdi was third in 2:04:32.

Sifan Hussain from the Netherlands won in women's, running 2:13:44 at the Chicago Marathon, which is one of the six World Marathon Majors with Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin and New York.

This year's final marathon major will be held in New York on Nov. 5.
