Leicester City win appeal against alleged breach of Premier League spending limits

After Leicester's appeal, independent panel determined that there was no jurisdiction for case to proceed

ISTANBUL (AA) — English club Leicester City won an appeal against a decision that could have led to a points deduction over an alleged breach of Premier League spending limits, the side confirmed on Tuesday.

An independent appeal board reversed an earlier decision by a commission that the club exceeded a £105 million (about $137.8 million) three-season loss threshold in Premier League profitability and sustainability rules.

It found that Leicester's accounting period actually ended on June 30, 2023, a month and two days after they were relegated from the top division, meaning that the Premier League did not have jurisdiction to rule on the matter.

"To avoid any misunderstandings which may arise in light of the statement which has been issued by the Premier League in response to the appeal decision, Leicester City wishes to emphasise the finding of the Appeal Panel that, when considering the wording which is actually used in the Premier League rules (in accordance with established principles of English law) the Club did not breach the Premier League PSRs (profitability and sustainability rules) for the assessment period ending 30 June 2023," the club said in a statement.

The Foxes were initially referred to an independent commission by the Premier League in March. The commission dismissed the club's initial challenge to its jurisdiction to hear the case.
