ANKARA (AA) - Daniil Medvedev is set to become world number one in the ATP Rankings as Novak Djokovic lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to Czech Jiri Vesely on Thursday in a Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships quarterfinal game.
"It is an amazing feeling. I never really thought I would have a chance against Novak. He is one of the greatest of all time," Vesely said after beating Djokovic.
After the defeat, Djokovic's record 361-week reign as world number one would come to an end as Russia’s Medvedev will top the ATP rankings on Monday.
Since Djokovic regained the top spot in the ATP Rankings in February 2020, the Serbian superstar has won eight tour-level titles, including three Grand Slams and three ATP Masters 1000 trophies.
Medvedev will become the third Russian player to become world number one after Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1999) and Marat Safin (2000-01).
