Moscow summons Danish envoy over comments on work of foreign companies in Russia

Remarks by ambassador a violation of Vienna Convention, contradicts essence of what an ambassador is called upon to do, says Foreign Ministry

By Burc Eruygur

ISTANBUL (AA) - Russia on Monday summoned Denmark’s ambassador for what it said were "unacceptable" comments regarding the activities of foreign companies in the country.

“Statements by the official representative of Denmark containing assessments of the Russian economy and the legal foundations of our state are unacceptable and border on interference by Copenhagen in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Jakob Henningsen’s remarks, the ministry said, are a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and “contradicts the very essence of the functions that the ambassador is called upon to perform in the host country.”

“It was stated that the main damage to the work of foreign companies in Russia, including Danish ones, is caused by the anti-Russian sanctions of the EU and the US. At the same time, entrepreneurs who have decided to continue their activities in our country enjoy the full support of the Russian authorities,” the statement added.
