ANKARA (AA) - NBA great Michael Jordan's rookie season basketball sneakers on Sunday sold for a record-breaking price of nearly $1.5 million at an auction in the US.
"The most valuable sneakers ever offered at auction—Michael Jordan's regular season game-worn Nike Air Ships from 1984—have just sold at $1,472,000 in our luxury sale in Las Vegas," Sotheby's auction house said on Twitter.
Jordan, 58, wore the red and white Nike Air Ships in his first season with the Chicago Bulls in 1984.
He was said to wear the Nike Air Ships pair in the fifth game of his rookie season.
The former US shooting guard spent most of his career with the Bulls, where he became an iconic player and made a global impact for the game.
Then Jordan and Nike combined powers to create the Bulls superstar's signature sporting brand named Air Jordan, which is still active.
Jordan won six NBA titles in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998 during his career with the Bulls.
He was also a six-time NBA Finals MVP (most valuable player) and 14-time NBA All-Star.
Jordan retired from basketball in 2003.
In April, US rapper Kanye West's sneakers (Nike Air Yeezy 1) that he wore at the 2008 Grammy Awards sold for $1.8 million, although it was a private sale.
